Dal Palak Curry



Dal Palak Curry

Dal-palak as the name suggests is a combination of sambar dal with spinach. This is a very healthy dish with all the vitamins, fiber and folic acid coming from dal and antioxidants and other nutrients from spinach. This curry goes well with rice or roti.
Basic info about the recipe
Cuisine                                                      - North Indian
Serves                                                       - 2-3 people.

Ingredients:
1.   Toor dal                                                - 1 cup
2.   Palak                                           - 1 cup
3.   Ginger-garlic paste                    - 1 tsp
4.   Onion                                          - 1 medium
5.   Tomato                                        - 1 medium
6.   Salt                                              - to taste
7.   Asafoetida                                  - a pinch
8.   Turmeric pwdr                                      - ½ tsp
9.   Red chilli powder                       - ½ tsp
10.       Green chillies                         - 2 nos
11.       Coriander powder                 - 1 tsp
12.       Cumin powder                       - ½ tsp
13.       Ghee                                                - ½ tsp
14.       Oil                                           - 2 tsp.

Method:  Finely Chop palak, onion, green chillies and tomato.

Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add ginger-garlic paste. Stir fry.

Add onion, tomato and green chillies and fry till golden brown.

Add turmeric, red chilli, coriander and cumin powders and stir.

Add dal, palak and salt and cook  after adding required water.2 whistles on high flame, then after reducing the flame  2 whistles on low flame.

Wait for 10 mts after the gas is switched off. Open and add asafoetida and ghee and mix well.

The dal should be of medium thick consistency. 

Serve hot with rice or roti.

Note: Adding ghee increases the taste and helps in reducing the acidity.
